French indie electronic duo The Penelope[s] mixes a distinctly pop sensibility, drawing on synth-pop and techno with that perfect dash of early 90’s indie rock. “Stuck In Lalaland (feat. Morpheus)” is a perfect example of the band’s wide ranging appeal, from home listeners to club kids. While rock in structure, “Stuck in Lalaland” shines a light on the disco ball, dances with hi-hat profusion and slapped basses, recalling a more soulful MGMT or cheekier LCD Soundsystem. The dance appeal of the track is perfectly captured by Japanese remix wizard 80 Kidz, who build on the dance hit production and turns this song into a frenzied techno club anthem.
The real star attraction here, however, is the Nouvelle Vague Remix. The bossa treatment reinvents the song’s timeless, irreverent feel, and features vocals supplied by Elli Medeiros. Now legendary for her turn in 70′s punk band Stinky Toys (opening for the Sex Pistols & The Clash at the infamous 100 Club gig), Medeiros went on to record one of the biggest French hits of the 80′s before turning her attention to acting, most notably with Olivier Assayas and Eric Rohmer. “Stuck in lalaland” marks a rare return to singing for one of France’s most charismatic personalities.
